Life App – Week 1 Manuscript (Compassion)

We are starting a brand new series titled: LIFE APP in our Victory Malate Youth Services. Our services are located at the LifeBox Center in University Mall just beside DLSU-Manila and CSB. This series: Life App is based on the verse Colossians 3:12-13:

“Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. 13 Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.”

In this 4-week series we’ll be talking about and have talked about the following topics: Compassion, Humility, Patience, and Forgiveness. Due to our limited time we can only discuss a maximum of 4 topics for this series.

The reason we titled this series “Life App” is because our main verse is an exhortation to us Christians regarding our responsibility on how we should conduct our lives in view of what Christ did for us. These 4 LIFE APPs are some of the things that we Christians are commanded to APPly in our lives. 🙂

I gave a message during the first week of our series and talked about Compassion. Whenever I do my preaching I always create verbatim manuscript. This is my style of preparation, and have been doing so ever since cause I’m not really a spontaneous kind of guy. I thought of sharing my manuscript notes here in my blogsite to share with everyone who wasn’t able to attend last Thursday. Feel free to read and let me know your thoughts! 🙂

Introduction

Good evening everyone!

Happy month of May to all of you!

Welcome to our Victory Malate Youth Service. If it’s your first time here we’d like to get to know you and welcome you in this place!

You came at a perfect time in a way dahil summer, walang masyadong tao so we hope that we can meet one another later after the service!

Brand new series

If it’s your first time here you are at the start of a brand new series titled LIFE APP.

Apps

And in today’s day and age, saan ba natin usually ginagamit itong word na ito: “APP”.

Sa? Saan? Any guesses?

Sa mga gadgets natin nowadays.

Yan, iPhone, Androids, sa mga TABLETS.

Apps are what makes these devices useful! (Kasi pag wala yang mga yan mejo useless siya)

ME (ENGAGE ON APPS)

I remember the first time I tried using an iPHONE. It was probably around 2010 or 2009.

I borrowed my phone’s friend tapos nung ginamit ko siya.

Sobrang natuwa ako kasi wow ang daming uses ng mga ganitong phones nowadays.

Kala ko dati, para lang mag mukha kang mayaman or “cool” but these technology are very useful to us!

That’s why, dati kasi masyado ako namamahalan sa iPhone so bumili ako ng iPOD sobrang mura compared sa iPHONE.

Then I’d use the apps of my iPOD.

Until now I use it with my iPHONE and iPAD.

ME (ENGAGE ON APPS/FAVORITE APPS)

FAVORITE apps:

BIBLE!

EXPENSE TRACKER

Camera

NOTES

Alarm Clock

WAZE (GPS)

FB/INSTAGRAM/TWITTER

KINDLE

GAMES plants vs zombies

Imagine all-in-one device because of these apps

2048!!!

Hindi lang yan sobrang dami pang apps available for download!

FACTS ON APPS

Nowadays, there’re millions of APPS available for download.

Alam niyo ba na since October 2013 there are already 1 million apps available for download today!

Some of them may bayad while some are for free!

SEGUE TO TENSION

And while there are millions of apps out there that we can download and are useful for us (just like APPS that are useful for ME!)

Not all apps will be useful for us! There are apps na you won’t find that particularly useful, walang kwenta siya for you delete na lang.

That’s why you just have to pick the right app for you and that will be useful for you.

TENSION

In the same way, in this world, (just like the world of apps) there are many sources of advice that will lead to changes in our behaviors but not all of these things will really lead to a positive change and impact our lives for the better.

Tonight in this series let me submit to you today that there’s only one REPUTABLE source that has a proven track record of changing lives and that is the BIBLE!

That if you were to choose which source will have the greatest impact and lead to changing our lives for the better hopefully you will choose your source to be God’s word, because the word of God has changed countless/millions of lives for centuries.

San ka pa pupunta diba? Sa Bible nalang sana.

And this is our hope for this series that as we learn from the word of God, we will start applying the things that we learned in our lives.

ANOTHER REASON WE TITLED THIS LIFE APPS IS BECAUSE HOPEFULLY AS WE ALL LEARN FROM THE WORD OF GOD WE’LL NOT ONLY LISTEN AND LEARN BUT APPLY THE THINGS WE LEARN IN OUR LIVES AS WELL.

That’s why it’s titled: LIFE APP!

NEXT FOUR WEEKS

Join us for the next 4 weeks as we look at 4 different life apps from the word of God.

Next week we’re going to talk about the

HUMILITY APP (So hindi na ako pupunta dyan because hindi ko na kelangan itong app na ito eh, baka kayo kekelanganin niyo yan, kasi ako humble na ako) HEHE. JOKE lang baka pag babatuhin niyo ako dito.

Ako pala ang may kelangan nito.

Week 3 we’re going to talk about the

PATIENCE APP

Yan, sino sa inyo hindi kayo makapg hintay na pagusapan natin itong app na ito?

AYAN. Kaya nga natin nilagay sa week 3 para matuto kayo maging patience. WRONG GRAMMAR EH haha!

And of course during our last week we have the:

FORGIVENESS APP

Who among you needs to forgive? Or who amongst you have something against someone?

Week 4 is perfect not just for you but for all of us!

Eh kuya Andrew hindi eh, hindi mo ako naiintindihan, kaya come join us on week 4

Today we’re going to talk about this APP:

The COMPASSION APP

Yan tignan mo nga yang katabi mo, mukha bang compassionate?

Today we’re going to look at a passage of scripture in the Bible which gives us a picture of what does it really mean to be compassionate? So that hopefully we’ll learn to apply it in our lives.

COLOSSIANS 3:12 OVERVIEW (SERIES TENSION)

But before we go THERE (to our scripture for tonight)

We’ll answer this question first.

Why do I need to apply those “life apps” in my life?

Again, our heart for this series is that maapply natin ito sa life natin!

Tama ba?

Gusto natin, sa series na ito that it will not just be a feel good series na after hearing the message you feel inspired and great pero after that pag uwi mo sa bahay.

Ano nga ulit yung message? No application.

Christianity, is not just about religion and theology. Did you know that scripture/God’s word is primarily interested in the application of the things that we learn?

Our main verse for the entire series is based on Colossians 3:12

It says here:

Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. 13 Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.

If you look at that verse, dami pa ngang ibang life apps, but since we’re only limited to four weeks we only had to pick and choose 4.

This verse starts of with a THEREFORE.

When you say therefore, it’s a conclusion, it’s a result of something based on what was mentioned previously.

And previously, in Chapter 3 (in the beginning of that Chapter, Paul talks about us being raised in Christ!)

Diba the serious before this was dead man walking.

HOW many of you are thankful again that we are no longer DEAD MAN WALKING?

That’s because of Jesus Christ. Because we’ve received Jesus Christ as our personal Lord and Savior.

Paul emphasizes in this chapter that since we are now raised in Christ (we’re a new creation etc. etc.)

THEREFORE!

We are to “clothe” ourselves with these things.

With these LIFE APPS!

And let me just ask a question. Who among you hear, you can confidently say that you have placed your faith in Jesus Christ. You have received him as your personal Lord and Savior?

Then this is for you!

Paul commands us, “Clothe” ourselves with these things.

And the things about clothing is: We have to wear clothing everyday even during those times.

Meron ba dito, can confidently say na OK lang sa iyo na lumabas ng bahay ng walang DAMIT.

WALA diba? (JOKE)

It’s something that you do every day and it’s something that is distinctly seen in you.

So when the Apostle Paul tells us to clothe ourselves with these LIFE APPS.

What he’s telling us is we have to do this on a consistent basis or these LIFE apps should be distinctly seen in our lives.

Since you have been raised in Christ… therefore! YAN. It’s an imperative for us.

Another thing about clothing is you can’t do without it. PARANG cellphone mo yan or APP.

Pero bakit para sa ating Christians this is something that doesn’t come natural for us!?

And again what we’re going to do today is we’re going to look at a passage of Scripture that will help us understand and know the SPECS (details) of these LIFE APPS so that we can apply it in our lives

BIBLE READING

So if you have your Bibles with you kindly turn them with me to Matthew 20:29-34

COMPASSION

Matthew 20:29-34

29 As Jesus and his disciples were leaving Jericho, a large crowd followed him. 30 Two blind men were sitting by the roadside, and when they heard that Jesus was going by, they shouted, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!”

31 The crowd rebuked them and told them to be quiet, but they shouted all the louder, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!”

32 Jesus stopped and called them. “What do you want me to do for you?” he asked.

33 “Lord,” they answered, “we want our sight.”

34 Jesus HAD COMPASSION on them and touched their eyes. Immediately they received their sight and followed him.

PREACHING TENSION: WHAT DOES COMPASSION LOOK LIKE?

In the last verse that we read it says there that Jesus had compassion!

So what does compassion look like?

Many times when we hear the word compassion we associate it primarily with “feelings”

Na kapag you see someone in need, or maybe that’s the poor, or an inspirational video about something.

Tapos may nafeel ka. Nasad ka, nahurt ka for them or you got angry because of injustice. Feeling natin naassociate na natin siya with COMPASSION.

BUT Is it just all about feelings? Pag sinabi ni Paul clothe yourself with compassion (basta you feel something ok ka na compassionate ka na?)

But as we read this passage of Scripture, we can get insight on what does compassion look like.

What is the COMPASSION APP really all about?

What are the qualites that make a person compassionate?

As we backtrack a few verses, we can get more insights what is true and real compassion is all about.

That it isn’t just relegated to a bunch of feelings only

FIRST POINT: COMPASSIONATE PEOPLE NEVER MAKES BUSYNESS AS AN EXCUSE

It says here:

29 As Jesus and his disciples were leaving Jericho, a large crowd followed him.

Si Jesus kasi sobrang sumisikat na siya nung time na yun because of the miracles he made. That’s why crowds followed him.

And how many of you know people like that? Maybe sa school niyo, yung student council president. Or president ng malalaking organizations sa school niyo. Diba madami silang kilala usually?

Or ganito nalang, how many of you know this person?

OBAMA

He visited our country this week right? “Arguably the most powerful person in the world”

I saw him in the news and I saw employees of the Malacanang Palace shaking hands with him.

I don’t know about you, but to get a handshake with the President of the U.S. will be such a milestone in my life.

Si OBAMA lang yan ah, pano pa kaya si Jesus Christ?

The son of the living God!

My point is this, Jesus is very very busy. Jesus is probably the busiest person who ever walked this world! EVER! PUPUSTA ako! JOKE! BAWAL PUMUSTA SA CHURCH! It’s a metaphor.

The reason I’m saying this, is because sometimes we hide behind that excuse, the excuse of “Busyness” that’s why we don’t do acts of COMPASSION

But we can’t and shouldn’t hide behind the excuse of “busyness” because

COMPASSIONATE people never makes BUSYNESS an excuse

Don’t worry I’m preaching to myself! This preaching is also a timely word for me.

And I hope that when we get busy we’ll stop and be sensitive to the needs of the people around us.

Because if we pay attention closely, we’ll hear the needs of the people around us. And realize how MANY the needs of the people are.

And that is exactly what the next verse shows us.

COMPASSIONATE PEOPLE TAKES TIME TO LISTEN TO THE NEEDS AROUND THEM

30 Two blind men were sitting by the roadside, and when they heard that Jesus was going by, they shouted, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!”

When the two blind men saw Jesus and because of the great miracles they’ve been hearing about him they suddenly had hope.

Imagine being in that situation for years. Sawang sawa ka na sa ganon, maybe they even came to the point of acceptance. Na eh ganon nalang talaga eh, wala talagang magagawa. Lord I’ve been crying for many years already pero wala naman nangyari, give up nalang. (BUT FOR so many years you’ve been crying out to God)

But when they heard about Jesus, hope began to rise. Because they knew that if he can create miracles, heal people and feed the hungry then it’s very possible that they can be rescued from their “hopeless” situation.

And that’s the condition of our world today, if we pay attention.

If we take the time to listen. The whole world is crying out because of certain situations they’re in.

You just don’t know it but the voices are there.

And hopefully we as a people would be compassionate. And Compassion:

COMPASSIONATE people takes time to listen

(ILLUSTRATION)

I’m guilty of this because sometimes I’m very insensitive to the environment around me.

I’m insensitive to the needs of the people. Di ko lang alam na people are crying out already desperate for help but what do I do? What do we Christians do?

Compassionate people pays attention to the tension

Compassionate people takes time to listen

And not unlike the crowd in this next verse:

CONTRAST ON COMPASSION AND APATHY

31 The crowd rebuked them and told them to be quiet, but they shouted all the louder, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!”

And as Christians and not just Christians but a lot of students/people nowadays are like the crowd. And there’s one word to describe what this crowd showed: APATHY.

APATHY. Walang pakielam, that is an antonym of COMPASSION à APATHY.

And as Christian’s especially if you’re a Christian, you can’t just be apathetic.

This is one word that should be taken from our vocabulary because Christians should not be characterized as such.

PAUL says: CLOTHE YOURSELVES WITH COMPASSION.

And as the two blind men continued to call out Jesus Christ

Jesus heard, he wasn’t apathetic, he didn’t ignore them.

He took time to listen

And now compassion is not just about listening but about stopping as well to do something the things God is calling us to do.

JESUS DEMONSTRATING COMPASSION BY TAKING THE TIME TO LISTEN, NOT MAKE BUSYNESS AS AN EXCUSE AND NOT BEING APATHETIC

32 Jesus stopped and called them. “What do you want me to do for you?” he asked.

33 “Lord,” they answered, “we want our sight.”

Jesus stopped and called them

Now here we see in this Scripture na si Jesus hindi lang siya all about the position or title he’s given but this act showed his heart to reach out to others

Jesus made time for them amidst all the busyness

Jesus stopped whatever he was doing to attend to the needs around him

Jesus took the time he asked the blind man: What do you want me to do for you?

Eto na nga si Jesus ang pinaka busy na tao sa buong mundo pero siya pa rin yung nag make time para doon sa two blind men. Hiyang hiya naman ako sa kanya diba!

See if the busiest man in the world can find time to do something about the needs of the people around him then why cannot we?

I am sure that we can, we should not just hide behind the excuse of our busyness or apathy.

Sakit diba… do not worry because as I prepare for this message God is also convicting me in this area.

After Jesus asked them that question immediately the two blind men said they want their sight…

MAIN AND ONE SIMPLE POINT: COMPASSION IS NOT JUST ABOUT FEELINGS BUT IS PRIMARILY ABOUT ACTION

34 Jesus HAD COMPASSION on them and touched their eyes. Immediately they received their sight and followed him.

And to make a long story short, Jesus HAD COMPASSION ON THEM because that is what he demonstrated, he touched their eyes and received sight.

Basically, one simple point that can summarize the point of this preaching is this:

COMPASSION IS NOT JUST ABOUT FEELINGS BUT IS PRIMARILY ABOUT ACTION

COMPASSION is not just a bunch of feelings or emotions, but COMPASSION is primarily us doing something about the condition of the people around us just like Jesus.

And just to add to my point, the word COMPASSION here literally means in its original language: to yearn from the bowels

Ano ibig sabihin noon

When you say yearn it is a description of an intense feeling

And bowels refer to our intestines

So when you have an intense feeling in your intestines… you know what that means right/

Time to go!

Meron na ba sa inyo, kapag na jejebs na or napopoopoo na wala kayong urge to go to the bathroom

Most likely tumakbo kayo from where you were and rushed to the bathroom.

Kung hindi, kaplaw, kaboom!

Kaya you are lead to do something about it, it is not just about feelings then right after you ignore it.

COMPASSION IS NOT JUST ABOUT FEELINGS BUT IS PRIMARILY ABOUT ACTION

AVENUES WHERE WE CAN SHOW COMPASSION

And in this world and society there are many areas wherein we can demonstrate compassion.

One could be your very own family members, maybe that is a brother in need or your sister who just need someone to talk to

Maybe that your friend na alam mo lang may pinagdadaanan but you are not just doing anything about it. Whoever that friend is! Wala namang pinpili si Jesus eh. Oh kahit hindi na friend kahit acquaintance lang. They do not have to be your friend to show compassion to them.

Someone from Church maybe.

Or that could be someone who has a cancer, someone in the orphanages.

Or sometimes maybe there are calamities that happen like what happened last year with YOLANDA.

OUR PRIMARY AVENUE OF SHOWING COMPASSION: REAL LIFE FOUNDATION

Here in this Spiritual family as we continue to Honor God and Make Disciples our primary expression of showing compassion to our neighbors is through the REAL LIFE FOUNDATION.

REAL LIFE FOUNDATION

REAL LIFE is a Christian non-profit, NGO (Non-Governmental Organization) and has the vision of seeing thousands of marginalized Filipino youth educated, gainfully employed and uplifting their communities.

In fact we have some scholars from the real life foundation here tonight in these place and are greatly blessed because of REAL LIFE efforts

That is our primary avenue of how we demonstrate compassion to our society.

If you are interested to partner with real life, you can do so by giving financially, yes as young as you are you can be a blessing, or volunteering for real life. If you want to do so please approach me so we can talk.

I am saying this because maybe some of you have a heart and are compassionate for the poor and marginalized, tapos you are saying pano yun I want to help but I do not know where, you can go to REAL LIFE and be a part of what God is doing there.

Together we can combine our efforts for the greater good.

REEMPHASIS ON THE POINTS AND THE MAIN POINT

All of this I am saying to show us that there are so many needs in our world today and if we just do not hide behind the excuse of busyness or apathy, and took the the time to listen and MOVE ourselves in to action again because:

COMPASSION IS NOT JUST ABOUT FEELINGS BUT IS PRIMARILY ABOUT ACTION

QUESTION TO PONDER AND ADVICE: DO FOR ONE WHAT YOU CANNOT DO FOR ALL.

Question: what is God telling you today? Where does he want you to help? And when I say help you do not have to feel pressured to participate in everything kasi hindi mo kakayanin.

All you have to do is pick and choose one.

Do for one what you cannot do for all.

CLOSING TENSION: WHAT IF I DO NOT FEEL COMPASSIONATE?

And lastly, as I close, some of you maybe thinking this or asking. Eh kuya Andrew what if wala talaga eh and I do not feel compassion at all?

I do not want to pretend na compassionate ako kasi sa loob loob ko lang hindi talaga?

CANNOT FAKE THE FEELINGS: PRAY TO GOD TO MAKE US COMPASSIONATE

And you know what that is OK because COMPASSION cannot be manufactured you just cannot.

You do not have to fake the feelings!

But one thing you can do is ask GOD and pray to him to make you compassionate and allow him to open your eyes and see HOW COMPASSIONATE he really is

GOD IS THE FATHER OF COMPASSIONATE: HE IS THE FIRST ONE TO BE COMPASSIONATE AND INFINITELY COMPASSIONATE

Because as we see God and how compassionate he really is then that will be the one that will help us to be compassionte knowing THAT OUR GOD is THE ONE WHO IS FIRST AND INFINITELY MORE COMPASSIONATE THAN US.

as we read the ending of that verse it says there:

CHRIST-CENTERED: TWO BLIND MEN RECEIVED SIGHT TO SEE THE ULTIMATE ACT OF COMPASSION THE CROSS

Immediately they received their sight and followed him.

And here is the clincher there, when the two blind men opened their eyes. YES they saw Jesus compassionate act towards them on how he healed their eyes.

But the ultimate reason he did that was because to let them see and WITNESS the GREATEST ACT of COMPASSION that HAPPENED 2,000 years ago when he died and paid for our sins on the cross.

THAT is the ultimate ACT of COMPASSION. KNOWING, SEEING, AND UNDERSTANDING THAT will be the key to help us be compassionate. KNOWING THAT JESUS CHRIST WAS THE FIRST ONE WHO WAS COMPASSIONATE TOWARDS US.

HOPE AND PRAYER AS WE BECOME COMPASSIONATE LET IT BE A SEGUES FOR US TO PREACH THE GREATEST ACT OF COMPASSION OF ALL TIME: THE GOSPEL

AND MY hope and prayer is this as well, that as we continue to demonstrate and show acts of compassion to others.

My hope and prayer is that we do not just minister to our friends or the poor and meet their felt needs, but hopefully for us Christians that will be a segue for us to share to them the GOSPEL the greatest ACT of COMPASSION in history and the reason why we can be ultimately compassionate.

Why do not we all stand up as close with a word of prayer?
