Last Monday I wrote a blog about my learnings from Anderson Silva’s fight at UFC 162.
The knockout was surely devastating for him. From being the UFC champion, then after the blink of an eye the belt is gone from him. Now he’s dislodged as the best pound for pound fighter in the world too. Will he recover? I’m not sure, I guess we’ll just have to see his rematch with Weidman. However, a case can be made of how the greatest boxers and fighters in history have never been the same again after a knockout loss. Just ask Mike Tyson, Chuck Liddell, Oscar De La Hoya and so on and so forth.
I thought how this can serve as an important illustration for our lives as well. We can have great careers, do well in studies, get high grades even, stay pure with our relationships, maintain our character and integrity, or continually grow our faith in God. However, if we’re not careful we can get KNOCKED OUT in this race called life.
You were running a good race. Who cut in on you to keep you from obeying the truth?
We can be running a great and fantastic race but all it takes for us is one knock out punch to destroy our lives. It may be an addiction that we can get ourselves into. It can be an immoral relationship that isn’t pleasing to God. For others more mature, it maybe integrity with money. Whatever those things maybe it’s scary because it can happen in an instant. Now I’m thinking of ways of how I can be able to prevent that knockout punch because I certainly don’t want that to happen in my life!
While writing this blog, I thought of this powerful verse:
“Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
Jesus told us to WATCH and PRAY so that we’ll not fall into temptation. I think this’ll really help us not be knocked out by that deadly punch because it helps us stay aware and on guard. Just like what happened to Anderson Silva if we don’t WATCH and PRAY that can be the beginning of the end.
Ephesians 6:11also says to put on the FULL ARMOR of God:
Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.
We always have to be on guard because we don’t know when the enemy is going to attack us that will lead to our downfall. Paul encourages us to put on God’s full armor! Read the rest of Ephesians 6 to understand what that full armor means.
1 Peter 5:8
Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lionlooking for someone to devour.
Lastly, we need to be ALERT and of SOBER mind. The word ALERT for me feels similar to watch and pray which Jesus mentioned while SOBER means to have a clear mind. When we get drunk we don’t think straight, but when we’re sober we act normally and that’s important.
Just to recap:
To protect ourselves from that KNOCKOUT punch, we should: 1) Watch and Pray, 2) Guard ourselves and put the FULL ARMOR of God and, 3) Be ALERT and SOBER.
What are some of the ways that you think can help us avoid that KNOCKOUT punch?
